The black powder muskets carried at the time had a horrendous misfire rate…gun accidents simply too common to report on.

Of course there’s nothing.

So long as those unloaded guns
We keep beside the bed,
Blow off, by obvious accident,
The lucky owner’s head,
If you love me as I love you
What can Life kill of Death undo?

— from An Old Song by Rudyard Kipling

Why do you call him a “pseudo historian”? You’re being too kind. Nothing he says appears to be historical. Nothing but a Rightwing Christianist hack.

“people only want to get rid of guns because they are afraid of them”

No, people want sensible gun control. We can’t snap our fingers and get rid of guns given how many millions of Americans own them.

Barton obviously didn’t look very hard.

I’ve read about numerous accidental discharges with fatal results in military encampments, amongst other places.

And yes, there was no central statistics collector, nor anyone systematically recording such incidents.

Heh, my great aunt and her mother got rid of my great-great grandfather’s civil war springfield rifled musket because they didn’t like guns in the house. (This was St Joseph Mo) They didn’t toss the powder horn, though. And the powder in it worked perfectly fine when we burned it in the 1960’s.

Barton certainly is living in his own fantasy world.

Somehow I think Barton knows as much about this subject as he does about the others he tries to make himself out to be an expert on.

In 1620 one of the original Pilgrims was making trouble on the way over, shot off his gun next to an open barrel of gunpowder, and almost blew up the Mayflower.
His father, John Billington, was subsequently hanged after the first murder trial in the new world; he shot one of the other colonists.
